Biography

Welcome to my website
My name is Rosanna Cappiello, I was born in Sorrento(Italy)

At the age of 19 I traveled to Great Britain where I lived for the past 11 years.

I consider myself an artist and I have an H.N.D. and a BA(Hons) Degree both in Photography.

Artist Statement

“There are an awful lot of people in the world and it's going to be terribly hard to photograph all of them... It was my teacher Lisette Model who finally made it clear to me that the more specific you are, the more general it will be.” (Diane Arbus).

I would class my art/photography as social realism, a kind of humanistic photojournalism, intimate photography mixed with social documentary. I am obsessed with the concept of The Other resulting in the urge to approach and spend time with people who attract my attention, I enjoy getting to know them and get a real feeling of their personality and life style and ultimately I need to photograph them. Being able to capture fragments of human life at precisely the right moment leaves me feeling (though I don't know why) that I've really got something and more importantly I am part of it.

It is an illusion to believe that ones life is his/her own life, life is not just our own, our life is the result of constant influences and interferences of others. People tend to make your life their own and vice versa, on the other hand, death, when it comes, belongs to us and only us.

I expect people to be part of my life and I want to be part of theirs and make an impact on them as they do on my photographs and my existence.

I am interested in all different cultural forms and in what or who generates them, e.g. Politics, religions, languages and even climate. The starting point of this interest is my own migratory experience as an Italian living in Britain, how I adapted myself to a completely different culture from my own and perhaps how I deal with being considered The Other myself, by British citizens.

I work mainly with documentary and portrait photography with spasmodic drifts towards fine art. Occasionally, I produce drawings from my own photographs.

At present I am enjoying entering photography competitions and I'm working on a few projects of my own.

I have exhibited in New York in April 2008 at the Umbrella Arts gallery, www.umbrellaarts.com and also at the NEC in Birmingham in 2006 as part of the Focus On Imaging trade fair. Most recently I have exhibited
at CUBE gallery(Manchester) and at the AOP gallery(London).

I have assisted local press photographer Nick Fairhurst and also celebrity photographer David Turner at his New York studio, see his work on www.davidturnerphotography.com
